World Ocean Day – How Every Diver and Snorkeler Can Make a Difference

June 8th is World Ocean Day, a global celebration of the ocean that connects us all. For divers and snorkelers, the ocean isn’t a distant idea it’s our playground, our peace, and our passion. But it’s also under threat.

At Fast Manta Diving Krabi, we see the beauty of the reefs every day—and we also see the damage. That’s why we believe every dive and snorkel should leave the ocean a little better than we found it. This World Ocean Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on how we can all contribute to ocean conservation—no matter our skill level.

Why World Ocean Day Matters

Our oceans generate over 50% of the oxygen we breathe, regulate global climate, and are home to over 70% of Earth’s biodiversity. But today, marine ecosystems face serious threats: plastic pollution, overfishing, coral bleaching, and coastal development continue to impact marine life and the communities that depend on healthy seas.

World Ocean Day isn’t just a day of awareness—it’s a call to action. And for us ocean lovers, it starts right where we feel most connected: beneath the surface.

7 Ways Divers and Snorkelers Can Help Protect the Ocean

  1. Improve Your Buoyancy

Poor buoyancy control is one of the leading causes of coral damage by divers. Being neutrally buoyant helps you avoid unintentional contact with fragile reef structures and gives you a smoother, more enjoyable dive. Courses like Peak Performance Buoyancy make a real difference.

  1. Dive with Eco-Conscious Operators

Support centers that take sustainability seriously. Fast Manta is proud to be a PADI Eco Center, a Green Fins Member, and a partner with Shark Guardian. These certifications reflect real actions, not just stickers on the door.

  1. Don’t Touch or Chase Marine Life

It might look harmless, but touching marine animals or even getting too close can stress them out or disrupt their behavior. Take only photos, leave only bubbles, and let the sea life come to you—if they want to.

  1. Join Underwater or Beach Cleanups

Every piece of plastic removed from the ocean matters. At Fast Manta, we include mesh bags and scissors with every dive set to safely collect debris. But you don’t have to be diving to help: join a local group like Trash Hero Ao Nang, which organizes regular beach cleanups and spreads awareness about reducing plastic waste on land before it reaches the sea.

  1. Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Many popular sunscreens contain chemicals that are toxic to coral. Choose reef-safe, mineral-based options, and apply at least 30 minutes before swimming. Even better—wear long-sleeve UV shirts to skip the sunscreen altogether.

  1. Become a Citizen Scientist

With the PADI AWARE App, you can log debris, animal sightings, coral bleaching, and more. This kind of data helps conservation scientists and policymakers take informed action. It’s a small action with a big ripple effect.

  1. Learn and Share

Tell your friends. Post on social media. Ask your guide questions. And take it further by signing up for ocean protection courses like the ones below—because informed divers make the best protectors.

Why PADI AWARE Courses Matter

If you want to dive with purpose, PADI AWARE courses are a fantastic way to turn your passion into impact. These courses combine underwater fun with direct conservation action.

Some of our favorites at Fast Manta:

🦈 AWARE Shark Conservation Specialty

Learn how sharks are misunderstood, what’s threatening them, and how you can help protect them through education and conservation diving.

🪸 Coral Reef Conservation Specialty

Even non-divers can take this one! Learn why coral reefs are so important, and what you can do to protect them in everyday life.

🐢 Dive Against Debris Specialty

Become a trained debris surveyor. You’ll collect trash and submit data that contributes to the global PADI AWARE Foundation database—used to fight pollution on a global scale.

These courses don’t just give you knowledge—they give you the tools to be part of the solution.

What We Do at Fast Manta and How You Can Join Us

As Krabi’s first and only PADI Eco Dive Center, we’re committed to protecting the ocean every day—not just once a year.

  • We’ve adopted Koh Yawasam as our home site for reef cleanups and monitoring
  • Our team is trained in using the PADI AWARE app
  • We provide eco tools to every diver: mesh bags, reef-safe tips, and education
  • All our courses are taught in neutral buoyancy—no kneeling on coral!
  • We collaborate with Shark Guardian and support community action groups like Trash Hero Ao Nang

Every Dive Counts

This World Ocean Day, remember: you don’t have to be perfect to make a difference. Just being a conscious diver or snorkeler—making thoughtful choices and inspiring others—can help protect the ocean we all love.

So the next time you strap on your fins, ask yourself:

“What can I do to help the ocean today?”
