Why Does a Dive Mask Fog?
Fog forms when warm, moist air from your face meets the cooler glass of your dive mask. The moisture condenses into tiny droplets, making the lens appear cloudy.
Brand-new masks can be even worse because the inside of the tempered glass is often coated with a thin layer of silicone residue left over from manufacturing. This invisible film gives condensation something to cling to.
Why Does It Keep Happening?
There are several common reasons your mask continues to fog.
1. Your Mask Is Brand New
New masks almost always need to be cleaned before their first dive. The silicone residue from manufacturing won’t disappear on its own. Many divers remove this coating by carefully cleaning the inside of the lens with non-abrasive toothpaste. Others prefer commercial mask cleaners or anti-fog products.
(Be careful with masks that have mirrored or coated lenses, as some cleaning methods can damage special coatings.)
2. You Didn’t Use an Anti-Fog
Even a clean mask can fog if you don’t use some form of anti-fog treatment.

- Commercial anti-fog sprays or gels
- Baby shampoo diluted with water

A poorly fitting mask can let small amounts of water enter continuously. Every time you clear your mask, you’re introducing fresh moisture, increasing the chance of fogging. A properly fitting mask helps keep the inside dry and reduces the need for frequent clearing.
The Biggest Myth: Should You Burn Your Mask?
You may have seen divers using a lighter to burn the inside of a new mask lens. This method can remove manufacturing residue from some masks, but it also comes with risks.
Applying too much heat can damage the silicone skirt, plastic frame, or any special lens coatings. Many modern masks don’t require burning at all. If you’re unsure, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations instead of assuming every mask should be burned.
What About Toothpaste?
Toothpaste is another popular method for preparing a new mask.
A non-gel, non-abrasive toothpaste can help remove silicone residue from plain tempered glass lenses.
However, avoid using it on masks with mirrored, tinted, or coated lenses unless the manufacturer specifically recommends it.
