Depending on the location and dive center, a PADI Instructor might be focused solely on teaching or could also be guiding certified divers on fun dives. Some destinations, like resort areas with frequent beginner divers, will have instructors spending most of their time running Open Water Diver courses. In other locations, instructors might mostly guide certified divers while occasionally teaching continuing education courses.
Here in Thailand, and especially in Ao Nang, Krabi, many instructors balance both—teaching and leading certified divers. Our dive sites attract a mix of beginners and experienced divers looking to refresh or improve their skills. Work Permits in Thailand – Why There Are No Foreign Divemasters
Thailand is unique in the diving industry because foreigners cannot work as divemasters. The role of a divemaster—guiding certified divers and assisting with courses—is legally reserved for Thai nationals. While many dive centers, including us at Fast Manta Diving Krabi, would love to hire more Thai divemasters and instructors, the number of local professionals available in the industry is still very limited.

One of the biggest advantages of being a PADI Instructor is the ability to teach beyond just the Open Water Diver course. Earning Specialty Instructor ratings allows instructors to teach a wider range of courses, such as:

As an Active PADI Eco Center and a Green Fins member, we are committed to sustainable diving. Every dive at Fast Manta is an eco dive, meaning we actively promote responsible diving practices, marine conservation, and underwater clean-ups.
Our instructors take an educational approach on every dive, teaching guests how small actions—like proper buoyancy, avoiding contact with coral, and using reef-safe sunscreen—can make a big difference. Many divers are eager to learn more, and this creates an opportunity for instructors to introduce PADI AWARE specialties and other conservation-focused courses as part of the dive experience.

A few days ago, the Fast Manta team had the opportunity to participate in a special training event with PADI Regional Manager Brendon Sing. This session focused on continuing education teaching and selling, helping our instructors better understand how to guide divers toward further training and more rewarding dive experiences.
We explored opportunities to become more experienced instructors, discussed how to identify what divers need to improve, and learned strategies to make continuing education a natural part of every diving day. This kind of professional development is key to making sure our team continues to grow, while also ensuring that our divers get the best possible training and experiences.
The Difference Between an Instructor Who Just Dives and One Who Loves to Teach
In the dive industry, there are two kinds of instructors:
- Those who expect the dive shop to sell for them. They take divers underwater, follow the dive plan, and finish the day without much interaction beyond that.
- Passionate instructors who love to teach. They actively engage with divers, identify skill gaps, and suggest ways to improve—offering continuing education courses as part of the experience.
