What Can You Find While Macro Diving in Ao Nang?
Nudibranchs (Sea Slugs)
Nudibranchs are undoubtedly the stars of macro diving. These tiny sea slugs come in an incredible variety of colours, shapes, and patterns, making every dive feel like a treasure hunt. Some are bright blue, others glow orange, purple, yellow, or pink. Despite their delicate appearance, each species has evolved unique ways to survive, from camouflage to chemical defences.
Ao Nang’s local dive sites are home to dozens of nudibranch species throughout the year, and it’s not unusual to spot several different species on a single dive.
Seahorses
Seeing a seahorse underwater is always a special moment.
Masters of camouflage, these tiny fish wrap their tails around algae, soft corals, or rope-like structures while waiting for tiny crustaceans to drift by. They can be surprisingly difficult to spot—even when they’re right in front of you.
Fortunately, our guides have trained eyes and often know the favourite hiding places of these remarkable animals.
Frogfish
Frogfish are among the ocean’s greatest masters of disguise.
Rather than swimming, they “walk” across the reef using modified fins. They perfectly mimic sponges, algae, or rocks and can remain completely motionless for hours while waiting for prey to come within striking distance. Despite their odd appearance, they’re one of the most sought-after subjects for underwater photographers.
Shrimps
Look closely into an anemone, coral, or crinoid, and you’ll often discover tiny shrimps living among their hosts. Cleaner shrimps, boxer shrimps, and many other species form fascinating relationships with larger marine animals, cleaning parasites or hiding among coral branches for protection.
Their tiny size and intricate patterns make them rewarding subjects for macro photography.
Crabs
The reefs around Ao Nang are full of fascinating crabs hiding in plain sight. Decorator crabs cover themselves with algae and sponges for camouflage, porcelain crabs wave their delicate feeding fans in the current, and many other tiny species spend their lives tucked safely inside corals and anemones.
Finding them requires patience—and a good eye.
A Paradise for Underwater Photographers
Macro diving is perfect for photographers of every level.
Because many of Ao Nang’s macro sites are relatively shallow, divers often enjoy longer bottom times to practice composition, lighting, and camera settings. Gentle conditions also make it easier to improve buoyancy while taking photographs.

Where Are Ao Nang's Local Dive Sites?
Ao Nang is located on Thailand’s beautiful Andaman coast in the province of Krabi. Just offshore lie a collection of small limestone islands that are home to some of the area’s best macro diving.
One of the biggest advantages of diving these local sites is how close they are. From Nopparathara Pier, it’s only around a 30-minute boat ride to reach the dive sites, giving you more time underwater and less time travelling.
At Fast Manta, we usually use traditional Thai longtail boats for our local island trips. Because we keep our group sizes small, longtail boats are the perfect way to reach these sites. They offer a relaxed, authentic experience and provide easy access to the islands while allowing us to avoid crowded dive boats.
