Living in Ao Nang
Accommodation
There are many accommodation options in Ao Nang, from hotel rooms and apartments to bungalows. Before booking, we recommend checking the map below with Fast Manta’s main locations, as our facilities are spread out. You won’t be at the shop every day, so it’s best to focus on easy access to Nopharat Thara Pier (longtail boats), Takola Pier (speedboat & equipment room), and our training pool at Baan Sawan.
Ao Nang can be busy, especially during the high season (October to May). If you prefer quieter surroundings, consider staying outside the beachfront area (green area on the map), where traffic is calmer and rides are more relaxed. Prices are usually higher during the high season, so book early. For longer stays (1 month+), better prices are more easy to find.

Restaurants & bars
Ao Nang offers a wide variety of restaurants and bars, from local Thai roadside shops to Western cuisine. You won’t be short of options. Several international supermarkets are also available if you’re craving familiar snacks from home. Most restaurants are concentrated in the beachfront area (red and orange areas on the map), while more relaxed beach bars outside the center of Ao Nang are perfect for sunset drinks. You’ll often find the team at spots like Strawberry Moon or Joy Beach Food. The perfect way to end the day with a fresh coconut or a cold beer.
Facilities
In Ao Nang you can find all essential facilities, such as medical centers, pharmacies, police stations, petrol stations, indoor gyms, and convenience stores. For small household items, shops like Mr DIY are easy to find. Larger shopping centers are located in Krabi, about a 30-minute drive away from Ao Nang, offering everything you might need. There’s no need to overpack. Clothes and everyday essentials are easy to buy locally.
Transport
Public transport is not common in Ao Nang. Shared taxis are available but mainly intended for tourists traveling between hotels and specific attractions. There are no public buses, and Grab can be unreliable, especially in the mornings. Getting around is easiest by motorbike, which can be rented daily, weekly, or monthly (longer rentals are usually better value). Always wear a helmet for your safety, and police checks are common. Also make sure your driving license is valid internationally before you arrive. If you’re not comfortable riding a scooter, we recommend taking lessons at home or in Krabi. Give yourself time to get familiar with riding before your divemaster training starts.
Communication
Most restaurants, hotels, and accommodations offer free Wi-Fi (just be sure to confirm this with your landlord before signing a contract). When Wi-Fi isn’t available, a local Thai SIM card from providers like AIS is a convenient option. It’s usually cheaper to buy one in Ao Nang than at Krabi Airport. SIM cards are prepaid, can be topped up monthly for data and calls, and require your passport for activation. You can also use an eSIM, though these are generally a bit more expensive. Internet access is widely available around Ao Nang, but don’t expect reliable service at remote dive sites. No worries. You’ll likely be much more focused on the dives than your phone anyway.
Budgeting Your Adventure
Cash vs. card
Thailand is still largely a cash-based country. The local currency is the Thai Baht (THB). ATMs are widely available in Ao Nang, making it easy to withdraw cash for daily expenses. Some places accept credit cards, but an exchange or service fee (up to 5%) may apply. Smaller Thai shops often don’t accept cards at all, so be sure to carry enough cash with you.

Important Administrative Steps
Passport & Visa
Something regular travellers often overlook is passport validity: your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Thailand. Regarding visas, citizens of many countries can enter Thailand visa-free for tourism, receiving a stay of up to 60 days on arrival, which can typically be extended once (usually by an additional 30 days) at a Thai immigration office. Nationals of countries that are not visa-exempt may be eligible for a visa on arrival, available at international airports. Always check the latest entry requirements on the official Thai Immigration website, as rules can change. In addition, all non-Thai visitors must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within 3 days before arrival.
Insurance
You should plan for 2 types of insurance: travel insurance for non-diving incidents and diving insurance for dive-related injuries. When training and diving with Fast Manta, you’re automatically covered by our diving insurance up to 1 million THB. For broader coverage, especially if you dive elsewhere in Thailand during your free time, for example in Koh Lanta or Khao Lak, we recommend taking an additional diving insurance, such as DAN, a leading provider in dive insurance. Your travel insurance should cover non-diving incidents like illness or accidents. Since scooters are a common way to get around, make sure motorbike accidents are included. Better safe than sorry.
Driving license
If you plan to ride a motorbike or drive a car, make sure your driving license is valid in Thailand. Your domestic license alone is not sufficient. You’ll need an International Driving Permit, which must be arranged in your home country before you travel. Police checks are common, so it’s best to prepare in advance rather than risking a fine. Keep in mind that without a valid license, your travel insurance may also be invalid in case of an accident.
How To Get To Ao Nang?
You can fly into either Phuket or Krabi Airport, both of which offer international connections. Phuket is about a 2-hour drive from Ao Nang, while Krabi Airport is much closer at 30-45 minutes. From either airport, you can arrange a shared taxi to Ao Nang, or we can help you book a private transfer, which is especially convenient if you arrive late at night. Once you reach Ao Nang, we’ll be there to welcome you!
What Should I Definitely Bring With Me to Ao Nang?
Although you can find about 95% of what you need in Ao Nang, we recommend bringing any personal medications that may be difficult to obtain in Asia. For women, feminine hygiene products are available locally, but the selection can be limited. Bring enough lightweight clothing, as the weather is hot and humid year-round. Don’t forget a rain jacket, as we occasionally get rainy evenings. There’s no need to bring mosquito repellent from home: effective sprays for local mosquitoes are widely available here. It’s also a good idea to bring or buy a dry bag, as boats are not waterproof. Finally, try not to overpack so you leave enough space in your luggage for your dive gear and personal souvenirs!
