What is CoralWatch?
CoralWatch is a global coral reef monitoring program that allows everyday people — including recreational divers — to help track coral health. Instead of complex equipment or scientific training, CoralWatch uses coral colour as an indicator of reef condition.
Healthy corals get their colour from tiny algae living inside them, called zooxanthellae. When corals are stressed, they lose these algae and become lighter or completely white — a process known as coral bleaching. By observing and recording coral colour, divers can help identify early signs of stress before large-scale bleaching events occur.
Where Was CoralWatch Developed?
CoralWatch was developed by scientists at the University of Queensland in Australia, with the goal of making coral monitoring accessible to everyone. Today, it’s used worldwide by divers, snorkelers, students, scientists, and conservation groups, creating a global database that helps researchers understand how reefs are changing over time.
